Beveled Wood Siding for Your Richmond Home

Bevel siding, which is more commonly called clapboard siding is a popular option used for an array of structures today. This siding is lumber that is resawn at an angle, which creates two pieces. On one edge, there is a thick butt and on the other, the edge is thinner.

During installation of the beveled wood siding, the edges are lapped so they effectively shed water. Choosing bevel wood siding provides you with a rustic look that is a popular option for log cabins and homes today. It is recommended that this type of siding only be installed horizontally to ensure the desired look is achieved. You can find bevel wood siding in an array of types, with some of the most popular options being cypress, eastern white pine, and western red cedar, but other options are available, as well.

Due to the extra steps required to create this product, the cost of this siding is slightly higher than some of the other options on the list, and this siding may require more maintenance than others because it is a natural material that can be impacted by the elements it is exposed to.

Interesting side note.  Presumably since wood has been used for home siding for so long, it has become a natural and common look on most homes.  It is a classic, timeless look that seems to impart a sense of security and grounding to most people.  It is so common that almost every other type of siding has options which make them look like wood.  Even concrete is now being stained and textured to look like wood.  Nothing comes close in popularity to the look, if not the actual product, of wood.

Pros and Cons of Wood Bevel Siding

Picture
Wood has a lot of advantages which will be listed here.

Wood comes in a wide variety of styles and types which have evolved and continue to evolve as new ideas become popular.  A few option styles are solid wood, clapboard, shakes, and shingles.  The most common types of wood are redwood and cedar due to their resistance to decay and rot, but many other types are used depending on the desired look.

Wood cladding is also available in a variety of styles to accommodate virtually any desired look.  The choices of wood, styles, and colors can be combined into a nearly infinite array of options to satisfy even the most discerning of tastes.

Due partly to its popularity and availability, wood can be installed quickly and there are lots of qualified contractors everywhere.  In fact, many homeowners with even modest carpentry skills are qualified to install it themselves.

Another advantage that should be considered is the ease of replacement.  Parts can be quickly removed and replaced inexpensively, where some other types of siding make small replacements very difficult if not virtually impossible.

For the environmentally minded homeowner, wood is an excellent choice due to its natural availability and propensity to decay when discarded.  Wood is the poster child for biodegradability.  Even if it finds its way to a landfill, it decays into compost over time, making it a ecologically friendly option.

Wood is easy to paint, and can be stained or painted to any color imaginable.  However this quality will also show up in the disadvantages since it is maintenance that is required from time to time.

The disadvantages of wood are as follows:

We will pick up with the painting.  Wood must be painted or stained to protect it from the weather, sun, and insects.  And once this is done, it will need to be redone, typically every three of four years, in order to keep it from rotting, cracking, or warping.  This can be expensive if you hire it out or time consuming if you try to do it yourself.

Without proper maintenance, damage is possible from a variety of wood-eating insects.  Termites are a common example.  These insects can cause extensive damage if not kept at bay.  Certain ants attack wood, as to some beetles and even bees.

It should be noted that the choice of wood can help to mitigate these types of damage.  Cedar and redwood, as mentioned earlier, offer protection against some of these pests.  In addition to their hardness, they possess chemicals in their cellulose that many insects find to be distasteful.

Cedar and redwood are no guarantee against it, but do offer strong natural resistance not only to the insect problem but also to rot.  And they are only marginally more expensive than other types of wood.

In summary, wood has a classic appearance, and is a natural on many homes, particularly older homes.  If you are leaning toward wood, consider carefully whether to go with real wood or some of the imitation wood products that are out there.  Some homes can have their classic look altered or irreparably harmed if the wrong quality of wood is used.
